| HENDRICK TREE FARM - NEWS LETTER. | 4-29-81 |
Months pass like hours and I don't get around to writing and some other things related to the TF as I should. Winter seems about over. Rain came in such quantities that it did an unusual amount of road and drainage damage at the TF. Of course we have more road and more culverts so more to be damaged. Trees love the weather. Lumber market badly depressed but that doesn't disturb trees that have a half century ahead of them. Has resulted in considerable unemployment with R3 but to the advantage of the MP.
I have been torn between the appeal of the new homesite at the MP and the love of the home at 939. Have finally decided to give up 939 and hope to do so by mid summer. The past several weeks my efforts have been almost entirely devoted to the completion of a 2 bedroom unit on the lower floor at the MP. This will become R3's home except during the dry summer when he will be at the TF. This completion might seem like a small task but it is about the same as building another house except that part of the framework was up and we worked under shelter. On the other hand the handicap of having to adjust to what was already done.
As the MP is now property of the corporation it might well be regarded as business headquarters and will be treated as such in our bookkeeping. Also should we get more machinery, that would be best stored here at the MP than unprotected at the TF so I now plan a 22x32 "barn" here at the MP with some ordinary storage space and for winter storage of machinery, repair space, etc.
Mid-winter past, we rented "Camping space" in the house at the MP to the Palmers from NJ. They are Sal's wife's parents. They fell so in love with the area that they bought a 2 acre site adjoining Sal, went back to NJ, sold their home and will be here about the first of June. Will camp in the MP house while Sal builds them a home.
I plan to spend part of my time at the TF occupying the old house and repairing it, roads, etc. Roy3 and Voni + 2 will use the upper cabin. R3 will be working with a logging outfit. I expect to get in some time at the MP and gradually moving from 939.
Main planning here now is for that big event in June. As new now plan it:
The Brookings contingent leaves Brookings the morning of June 24, Wednesday. All of us in the Winnebago, towing the Pontiac with a disconnected drive-shaft. Reach Redwood that evening. Evening with Nancy.Next morning on to Santa Barbara Stow Canyon Road. Stay Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday.
Leave Monday morning in the Pontiac (good-bye Winnie) for Redwood that night.
Tuesday leave Redwood for Brookings that evening.
At Santa Barbara, the big event plus such minor possibilities as a meeting of the stockholders of the HENDRICK TREE FARM, Ltd. It's first annual. We hope that we will not have to use proxies, so see you there.
Dad, RWH, or whatever.
