1423
Guardian Angel Helping a Young Girl Across Wooden Plank w/ a Serpent / Snake Below, Large Rare Antique Print This is a hard to find, magnificent and large antique lithograph print of a heavenly Guardian Angel helping a young little girl get across a rickety small wooden plank with a serpent waiting and hiding for them at the end. This is not the typical and classical picture of the Guardian Angel helping the two children cross the rickety bridge, although it does remind you of it. In all my travels, I’ve never seen this picture before with just the little girl, nor have I ever seen this picture represented with the plank and serpent. This rare scene features just the little girl, holding the Guardian Angel’s hand and with her other hand, she holds a wooden walking stick. It’s interesting to note that as the child walks across the narrow wooden plank, you can tell from her expression that she is obviously oblivious to the danger in front of her - the sneaky slithering evil serpent. Thankfully, her Guardian Angel sees it and protects her from harm. Both of their faces are charming and the bright, rich, and colorful details throughout make this piece all the more special. In addition, the lush, green landscape adds a nice sense of depth to this delightful scene. This large and captivating print is in excellent original condition. The molded wood frame retains the original black finish and is also in excellent original condition. Original glass and old twisted wire and string hanger. Missing the paper backing. Circa 1910.

1426
Saint Patrick Warding Off Snakes/Serpents, Small Antique Religious Wooden Decorative Icon Stand This is a nice antique religious icon depicting Saint Patrick warding off snakes/serpents with his wooden staff. There’s a lot of rich history and many legends about this scene. This is a small wooden icon. The colors you see were transferred onto this piece and remain in great condition. The colors and details are very attractive. Although small, this is a grand piece to display on any table or to bring out for celebration on St. Patrick’s day. It’s a wonderful representation of his most famous legend every told. The back of the icon and the top and sides of the stand retain their original black-painted finish. This piece is in excellent original condition. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting INFORMATION ABOUT THE LEGEND OF SAINT PATRICK:

"Pious legend credits Saint Patrick with banishing snakes from the island, though post-glacial Ireland never had snakes; one suggestion is that snakes referred to the serpent symbolism of the Druids of that time and place, as shown for instance on coins minted in Gaul (see Carnutes), or that it could have referred to beliefs such as Pelagianism, symbolized as ‘serpents’." The story goes, that sometime back in the fifth century Saint Patrick stood on a hill and used a staff to herd the slithering creatures into the sea, banishing them for all of eternity. Driving the snakes from Ireland was probably symbolic of putting an end to the Pagan practice. It‘s true, aside from zoos and pets, there are no snakes on the emerald isle. In fact, there never were snakes in Ireland."

"Legend also credits Patrick with teaching the Irish about the concept of the Trinity by showing people the shamrock, a 3-leaved clover, using it to highlight the Christian belief of 'three divine persons in the one God' (as opposed to the Arian belief that was popular in Patrick's time). Whether or not these legends are true, the very fact that there are so many legends about Patrick shows how important his ministry was to Ireland. Some Irish legends involve the Oilliphéist, the Caoránach, and the Copóg Phádraig. During his evangelizing journey back to Ireland from his parent's home at Birdoswald, he is understood to have carried with him an ash wood walking stick or staff. He thrust this stick into the ground wherever he was evangelizing and at the place now known as Aspatria (ash of Patrick) the message of the good news took so long to get through to the people there that the stick had taken root by the time he was ready to move on."

March 17, popularly known as St. Patrick’s day, is believed to be his death date and is the date celebrated as his feast day.

1431
“Madonna of the Magnificat” Virgin Mary, Child Jesus, & Angels, Rare Antique Print / Famous Artist: Sandro Botticelli This is a very special and rare, round in shape, antique print titled, "Madonna of the Magnificat". This picture was originally painted by the Italian Renaissance master, Sandro Botticelli, executed in 1481. It is currently housed in the Uffiza in Florence, Italy. The picture portrays the Virgin Mary being crowned by two beautiful angels. The Child Jesus can be seen holding a pomegranate in his hand, which symbolizes the Resurrection. This crisp and clear print has wonderful details everywhere you look and the colors are bright, vibrant, and rich. The scene is radiant with positive energy, creating a sense of divine beauty. This print is in excellent original condition. Original, round, molded wood frame with a nice gold and black painted original finish. The frame is also in excellent original condition. Original glass, paper backing, and old wire hanger. The paper backing retains its 2 original labels. One is the framer's label reading, "The Famous L.M.C.; Picture & Mirror Frames; L.M. Castner Co.; Williamsport, PA" and the other label is half torn off, but reads the artist’s name, title, and where the original painting is being housed and displayed. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PICTURE, "MADONNA OF THE MAGNIFICAT":

"The painting portrays the family of Piero de' Medici, lord of Florence from 1492. His wife Lucrezia Tornabuoni as Mary, Lorenzo de' Medici as the young man with the ink-pot, flanked by his brother Giuliano de' Medici who is holding a book. Behind the two boys is Maria, while the two elder sisters are holding the crown in the background: Bianca on the left and Nannina on the right. The newborn would be the daughter of Lorenzo, Lucrezia de' Medici."

*** I’ve also included, below, some information about THE MEANING BEHIND THE POMEGRANATE FRUIT:

"For the same reasons, pomegranates are a motif found in Christian religious decoration. They are often woven into the fabric of vestments and liturgical or wrought in metalwork. Pomegranates figure in many religious paintings by the likes of Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, often in the hands of the Virgin Mary or the infant Jesus. The fruit, broken or bursting open, is a symbol of the fullness of his suffering and resurrection. In the eastern Orthodox Church, pomegranate seeds may be used in kolyva, a dish prepared for memorial services, as a symbol of the sweetness of the heavenly kingdom."

1425
“Rock of Ages” Antique Print of Woman Clinging to a Stone Cross in Ocean Water This is an intriguing antique print full of mystery and meaning. Although this picture is not labeled, the correct title for this scene is called, "Rock of Ages - Cleft for Me". It’s a very famous scene that was created from a hymn, written by the Anglican minister, Augustus M. Toplady in the eighteenth-century. The print features a woman clinging to a stone cross in the middle of the ocean with turbulent waves crashing down on her. Beautiful wavy hair hangs down her back. An illuminating holy light is cast down from above, shining on the desperate woman and the cross that she so strongly clings to. This picture radiates with a powerful energy and is full of emotion. This scene is certainly open to interpretation. There are many stories and legends, as well as a hymn, that go along with this famous picture. This print is in excellent original condition. The colors are bright and vibrant and the details are crisp and clear. Original, gold-painted molded wood frame. The decorative frame is also in excellent original condition. Original glass, backing, and old metal hanger. The backing has old tape around the edges. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting information about the ‘ROCK OF AGES’:

There are several interpretations of this scene. One is that while the girl is clinging to the stone cross in the middle of the roaring ocean, there is a ship sinking in the background entitled, ‘Rock of Ages’. It’s supposed to represent everything from the women holding onto the cross of Christ as her last and final hope to the "Sailor’s Graveyard" and a crying wife whose husband was killed at sea with a large tombstone of the cross marking his grave in the deep and that’s all she has left to hold onto.

The ‘Rock of Ages’ symbolized faith.

It’s also been said to represent a person or soul who is lost in the ‘sea of sin’, whose only hope is to cling to Christ’s cross (the Rock of Ages).

In addition, it’s said that the Rock of Ages celebrates a milestone in the faith of living women and memorialize the dead, creating a nexus of meaning among hymn, women, and graveyards.

*** I’ve also included, below, some interesting HISTORY ABOUT ‘THE ROCK OF AGES’ HYMN, as well as HOW THE HYMN WAS CREATED BY TOPLADY:

Sir William Henry Wills, in a letter to Dean Lefroy, published in the London Times in June, 1898, says that "Toplady was one day overtaken by a thunderstorm in Burrington Coombe, on the edge of my property, Blagdon, a rocky glen running up into the heart of the Mendip range, and there, taking shelter between two massive piers of our native limestone rock, he penned the hymn, ‘Rock of Ages, cleft for me; Let me hide myself in Thee’. There is a precipitous crag of limestone a hundred feet high, and right down its centre is the deep recess in which Toplady sheltered."

In the book, "Hymns That Have Helped", the author, W.T. Stead stated:
"…when the London went down in the Bay of Biscay, January 11, 1866, the last thing which the last man who left the ship heard as the boat pushed off from the doomed vessel was the voices of the passengers singing ‘Rock of Ages’."

The hymn was sung at the funeral of William Gladstone in Westminster Abby, London, England. Prince Albert of Britain asked it be sung to him as he lay dying. The hymn was also reportedly sung at the funeral of American President Benjamin Harrison because it was his favorite hymn, and the only one he ever tried to sing.

*** Below is THE COMPLETE HYMN, ROCK OF AGES:

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

Lg Special Antique Victorian Photographic Print & Bedtime Prayer Motto 'Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep' Mother w/ 2 Children This is a hard to find, large, antique Victorian bedtime prayer with a compelling photographic print of a lovely mother embracing and praying with her young son and daughter by the fireplace. This is the well-known prayer of, ‘Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep…’. The print is bright and in excellent original condition. In the lower right corner of the print, there is a gold stamp that reads, "Copyright Manz, CHI." with the number ‘42’ in the other corner. The words of this bedtime prayer are in a beautiful, bold, and fancy Old English text. Gold-trim highlights nicely compliment the black text and the two borders framing the picture and blessing. In the lower left corner, under the blessing, it reads, "Coath Creation". The lower right corner reads, "House of Manz, Chicago". This is a large and attractive antique bedtime prayer. 1322
Antique Religious House Blessing w/ Jesus Print “God Bless Our Home” This is a lovely antique religious house blessing print titled, "God Bless Our Home". The way this piece is portrayed depicts a charming little cottage in the bottom center of the print with a picture of Jesus above, almost as though he’s watching over he house from above. His picture, which displays the Sacred Heart, is separate from the blessing, which could be considered the matting. It’s pretty interesting how the center matting appears to be in the shape of a picture frame with a nice decorative chain link hanger. The ‘hanger’ is linked to the beautiful scrollwork that decorates the top of the print. There’s even a faint, but fancy, triangular-shaped design pattern to the full background of this print. The way this print was uniquely colored almost gives the look of an airbrushed-effect to the scrollwork, house, and landscape. The lettering remains bold in color with fancy Old English text. This print and matting are both in excellent original condition. Original, gold-painted molded wood frame. The decorative frame is also in excellent original condition. Original glass and paper backing. Old string hanger. Circa 1920’s.

1418
Antique Religious Decorative Handmade Octagonal-Shaped, Christmas Themed, Keepsake Box 16 Different Scenes / M.L. Cooper This is a lovely handmade, print, plastic, and thread antique keepsake box. It’s uniquely curved, octagonal shape allows this box to display 16 different religious and inspirational scenes, on the outside, inside, top and bottom. There appears to be a Christmas theme to this box. This hand-done, beautifully threaded piece makes it all the more special. The multi-colored thread is very pretty and complimentary to the colors of the scenes. There is a little thread loss here and there to the sides of the box, but the thread on the top and bottom, which is more elaborate anyways, are excellent and remain tightly woven. The minor thread loss does not effect the shapeliness of this piece. Every scene featured on this box is captivating, including pictures of angels, 3 different Nativity scenes, The Holy Family, and several of Jesus as portrayed from a baby all the way to a man. Each scene is a separate print. Each print is protected with a thin, flexible, and clear plastic that has been stitched together by hand to create this uniquely curved shape. The small stamp on the outside of the box on one of the prints reads, "R copyright C". On the inside, bottom of the box, is the name, "M.L. Cooper". This name is stamped on only one of the 16 prints. The prints and plastic covers are in excellent original condition, except for only one on the outside that has a few minor creases to the print alone. It’s the picture of Jesus holding a baby lamb in his arms. The inside of the box is clean and ready for use. Circa 1920’s.

1438
Lg. in Size, Religious & Floral Antique Punch Paper Motto Bookmark w/ Original Silk Ribbon “Heaven Is My Home” This is an exceptional antique punch paper bookmark with the seldom seen motto, "Heaven Is My Home". This is all hand-done. The motto is ‘framed’ by beautiful stitchery, interestingly enough, in the shape of a bookmark. Above that, is a lovely and colorful creation of floral work. The elaborate, decorative design represents a variety of flowers. There must be over two dozen different colors of thread used to make this bookmark! The way the colors of thread blend perfectly into each other is very attractive. All of the threads remain bright and brilliant in color. The threading is tight and secure, front and back. There is no thread loss or signs of wear to the threading. The punch paper is in excellent original condition as well. There are No creases to the paper, No perforations to the holes, and No stains or tears anywhere! This unusually large, antique punch paper bookmark retains its original fancy, bright red silk ribbon. The ribbon has been beautifully stitched and remains tightly secured to the edge of the punch paper with matching red thread, although mostly concealed. The edges of the ribbon both have nice, finely-done, decorative fringe-work. The fringe has not frayed or come unwound any more than it was meant to. The ribbon remains bright and bold in color with no stains, holes, tears, and no snagging to the front and back of the silk fabric. There are just a couple Extremely Minor creases to the edge of the ribbon that could easily be flattened out. Interestingly, I was told that this antique punch paper bookmark was found in an antique Bible. Apparently, the Bible has kept it safe and beautifully preserved for many years in between its pages. This lovely bookmark must have been left and forgotten about for so long, explaining its clean, bright, and excellent original condition. Unfortunately, I do not have the Bible that it was found in. That would have been nice though. Overall, this very special, antique punch paper bookmark is in excellent original condition. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, a hymn by poet, Thomas R. Taylor, about the well-known motto, ‘HEAVEN IS MY HOME’: (this is also a song)

Title: "I’m But a Stranger Here":

"I’m but a stranger here,
Heaven is my home;
Earth is a desert drear,
Heaven is my home;
Danger and sorrow stand
Round me on every hand;
Heaven is my fatherland,
Heaven is my home.

What though the tempest rage,
Heaven is my home;
Short is my pilgrimage,
Heaven is my home;
And time’s wintry blast
Soon shall be over past;
I shall reach home at last,
Heaven is my home.

There at my Savior's side
Heaven is my home;
I shall be glorified,
Heaven is my home;
There are the good and blest,
Those I love most and best;
And there I, too, shall rest,
Heaven is my home.

Therefore I murmur not,
Heaven is my home;
Whatever my earthly lot,
Heaven is my home;
And I shall surely stand
There at my Lord’s right hand.
Heaven is my fatherland,
Heaven is my home."

Click for more detail...
1439
Small Italian Portrait Print of the Young Virgin Mary Overlooking City “The Adoring Virgin” / Artist: Filippino Lippi This is a very attractive Italian print featuring a glamorous, yet holy, picture portrait of the Young Virgin Mary. This picture is titled, "The Adoring Virgin" by famous Italian artist, Filippino Lippi, from Florence, Italy. From Mary’s expression, it appears she’s deep in thought, probably praying. In the foreground are mountains, village, and river. In addition, Mary’s preciously innocent face and fancy veil-type hairpiece give this picture a refreshing and youthful appeal. The print is in excellent original condition. Original, gold-painted molded wood frame. The frame is round in shape with a circular decorative pattern. The frame is in excellent original condition, but with an overall age-appropriate shabby-sheik-type wear to the finish. (see photos) Original glass, slightly torn, but all intact, original paper backing, and old metal hanger. There remains a nice original label on the paper backing that bares the artist’s name, location, title (in 3 languages), and country of origin, "Made in Italy". Circa 1950’s.

*** I’ve included some interesting information about the artist, Filippino Lippi:

Filippino Lippi, c.1457–1504, son of Fra Filippo Lippi and nun Lucrezia Buti, was a well-known painter working during the High Renaissance in Florence, Italy. Filippino first trained under his father. He soon became an accomplished painter, revealing the same mastery of color and line as his father, and in 1480, was entrusted with the completion of Masaccio's frescoes in the Brancacci Chapel, Florence. Filippino Lippi completed his apprenticeship in the workshop of Botticelli, who had been a pupil of Filippino's father. His first works greatly resemble those of Botticelli's, but with less sensitivity and subtlety. Lippi's last work is the Deposition for the Santissima Annunziata church in Florence, which at his death in April 1504 was unfinished. He was so renowned that all the workshops of the city closed on the day of his burial.

1457
Pair of Light of the World Antique Sepia Prints, Child Jesus & John the Baptist / Artist: Charles Bosseron Chambers This is a wonderful, compelling, and classic pair of antique sepia-tone prints. One print features Jesus as a Young Child, titled, "The Light of the World". The other print depicts, I believe, John the Baptist as a Young Boy. I have never come across a pair of these pictures before. Let alone, it’s quite rare to see a young John the Baptist portrayed in this classical scene. Both pictures were originally painted by famous listed artist, Charles Bosseron Chambers (1883-1964). His signature can be found in the lower right corner of the "Light of the World’ print of Jesus. The lower left corner of both prints read, "Copyright Edward Gross Co., N.Y.". This is quite a famous picture of Jesus and Chambers has become well-known for it. Both pictures are captivating and very appealing. Both John the Baptist and Jesus’ angelic face and rosy red cheeks practically bring these pictures to life. The subtle highlights of color on Jesus and Johns lips, cheeks, eyes, and front curls of their hair make these pictures all the more attractive. Both prints are in excellent original condition. Both have their original and complimentary molded wood frames. Original brown paint with gold trim highlights. The corners have a nice decorative design. Both of the frames are also in excellent original condition, except for the most minor age-appropriate wear to the brown finish. (see photo) Both frames retain their original glass. The frame with Jesus has its old wire hanger. The frame with John the Baptist has an old string hanger. The original paper backing of the Jesus picture is all there, but has been torn and taped. A nice original label remains fully intact on the paper backing and includes the name of the publisher, title, artist, and some interesting info about the picture itself. The paper backing of the John the Baptist picture is torn and partially missing. There is a remnant of its label on the paper backing, but unfortunately is missing. I assume it’s similar to the ‘Light of the World’ label on the other piece. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting information about the artist, CHARLES BOSSERON CHAMBERS:

"Charles Bosseron Chambers (1882-1964): Charles Bosseron Chambers was known for his figurative work, mainly portraits or works with religious themes. Chambers was born in St. Louis; his father was an Irish captain in the British army and his mother was a member of an established French family in St. Louis. According to his niece, Chambers later adopted the middle name "Bosseron" because he felt his last name "too plain" to reflect his French heritage.

Like many American artists at the turn of the century, Chambers studied art abroad, first at the Berlin Royal Academy, where he spent six years studying with Louis Schultz. He later studied with Alois Hrdliczka at the Royal Academy in Vienna and with Johannes Schumacher in Dresden.

After matriculating at St. Louis University, Chambers began his professional career at Palm Beach, Florida, a place chosen because of his mother's failing health. From this period in his artistic productions date the fantastic figure compositions exhibited at the St. Louis Exposition, together with portraits of Colonel Mitchell for the Missouri Historical Society; Joseph Jefferson, the great American actor; young Master Haven; Henry Phipps; Henry M. Flagler; Mrs. Voorhis and others.

In 1916, Chambers moved to New York City and established himself in the Carnegie Studios, Carnegie Hall, where he occupied and splendid atelier. It was here that he painted the "Light of the World," the most popular America religious painting of the early Twentieth Century.

He was a member of the Society of Illustrators, established in 1901 in New York City, and the Salmagundi Club, an early important art club in New York City. He illustrated Sir Walter Scott's, "Quentin Durward, "in the Scribner Classics for Young People.

His work was exhibited at the well-known John Levy Galleries in New York City in the 1930s, and his work is now in several public collections in St. Louis and Chicago, including Chicago's St. Ignatius's Church, Missouri Historical Society in St. Louis, and the Osceola Club in St. Augustine, Florida.

For the monastery, Chambers painted a number of works, the best known of which were his cover illustrations for the Commissariat's publication, Crusader's Almanac, such as The Crusader's Vision on Calvary and The Crusader's Death."
