SIZE

One size fits most

MATERIALS

• LION BRAND Wool-Ease

2 balls #147 Purple or color of your choice

• Size G-6 (4 mm) crochet hook OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE

• Size H-8 (5 mm) crochet hook

• Large-eyed, blunt needle

GAUGE

18 stitches = 4” (10 cm) in Flat Knot Stitch on smaller hook.

STITCH EXPLANATIONS

Flat Knot Stitch

Row 1 Skip first chain, *single crochet in next stitch, double crochet in following stitch; repeat from * to last chain, single crochet in last chain.

Row 2 Chain 1, *single crochet into single crochet of previous row, double crochet into double crochet of previous row; repeat from * across, end single crochet in last single crochet.

Repeat Row 2 for pattern.

Cluster Stitch

Round 1 Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 1, draw up a loop in each of next 3 sc, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook, *ch 1, draw up a loop in same stitch as last cluster loop, draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook; repeat from *, join with slip stitch in top of beg sc.

Round 2 Ch 1, draw up a loop in top of first sc, [draw up a loop in ch1-space, draw up loop in next cluster, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops, *ch 1, draw up a loop in same stitch as last cluster loop, draw up a loop in ch1-space, draw up a loop in next cluster, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops; repeat from * around, join with slip stitch in top of first cluster. Ch 1.]

Round 3 Draw up a loop in first cluster, repeat between [ ] in Round 2.

Repeat Round 3 to desired size.

HAT

With smaller hook, ch 26. Work in Flat Knot Stitch, increase 1 stitch at beg and end of every row, until work measures 16” in width and 6 1/2” in length. Work even for 5”; then decrease 1 stitch at beg and end of every row until 25 sc remain. Hat should now resemble an octagon in shape.

FINISHING

Band

Work 1 sc into each of 25 stitches, skip diagonal edge, then 15 sc along straight side of work. Work 25 sc along foundation ch and 15 sc on other straight side of work and join – 80 sc. Work sc all around until Band measures 2 3/4”. Turn work wrong side out and work 1 row of sc through back loop only. Work 8 rows of Cluster Stitch for turn back on band. Do not end off.

Picot Edge

Ch 1, *(sc, ch 3, sc) into same space, skip 1; repeat from * around.

Gather diagonal edge and sew down. Trim with Flower.

Flower

With larger hook and 2 strands held tog, ch 5, slip stitch in first ch to form ring.

Round 1 Ch 3, 9 dc in ring, join with slip stitch to top of beg ch – 10 stitches.

Round 2 Ch 2, working in front loops only, 2 half double crochet in each dc around. Join with slip stitch to top of beg ch – 20 stitches.

Round 3 Ch 1, *sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around end with sc, join with slip stitch to top of beg sc. Fasten off.

Round 4 With right side facing, join yarn to back loop of Round 1. Ch 4, 3 treble crochets in each back loop around, join with slip stitch to top of beg ch – 30 stitches.

Round 5 Ch 1, *sc, sc2tog; repeat from * around end with sc, join with slip stitch to top of beg sc. Fasten off.

beg = beginning
ch = chain
dc = double crochet
sc2tog = single crochet 2 together
sc = single crochet
tog = together
