MATERIALS: GAUGE: 13 sts = 3½" with size 11 needles in Pat I. TO INSURE PROPER SIZE, BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR GAUGE. STITCH EXPLANATIONS: FC = Front Cross: Sl 3 sts to dpn and hold in front, k 2, sl p st from dpn to left-hand needle and p it, k 2 from dpn. BC = Back Cross: Sl 3 sts to dpn and hold in back, k 2, sl p st from dpn to left-hand needle and p it, k 2 from dpn. RT = Right Twist: Insert right-hand needle into the 2nd st on the left-hand needle, k this st, then k the first st on left-hand needle, sl both sts off tog. PATTERN STITCHES: Pat I Plait Cable (13 sts = 3½") Pat II Wheat Ear Cable (17 sts = 4¼") BACK: With #9 needles, cast on 94 (98, 102) sts. Work in k 2, p 2 rib for 2½", end WS. Change to #11 needles. Est Pat: Row 1 (RS): P 2 (4, 6), RT, Pat I, RT, Pat II, RT, Pat III, RT, Pat II, RT, Pat I, RT, p 2 (4, 6). Cont in pat as est until piece measures 25½" from beg. Shape shoulder and back neck: Bind off 32 (33, 34) sts, work center 30 (32, 34) sts and place on holder for back neck, bind off rem 32 (33, 34) sts. FRONT: Work same as back until 23" from beg, end WS. Shape neck: Next row: Keeping to pat, work 39 (40, 41) sts, attach new yarn and work center 16 (18, 20) sts place on holder, work rem sts. Working both sides at the same time with separate balls of yarn, at each neck edge bind off 2 sts 2 times, then dec 1 st every other row 3 times -- 32 (33, 34) sts rem each side. Work even until front measures same as back to shoulder. Shape shoulders: Bind off rem 32 (33, 34) sts each side. SLEEVES: With #9 needles, cast on 38 sts. Work in rib as for back for 2½", inc 1 st at beg and end of last row -- 40 sts. Change to #11 needles. Est Pat: Row 1 (RS): Work last 9 sts of Pat II row 3 (k 1, sl 3 sts to dpn and hold in front, k 3, k 3 from dpn, p 2), RT, Pat III, RT, first 9 sts of Pat II (p 2, sl 3 sts to dpn and hold in back, k 3, k 3 from dpn, k 1). Cont in pat as est, inc 1 st each end every 3 rows 7 (8, 9) times, then every 4 rows 10 times working added sts into pat -- 74 (76, 78) sts. Next row: P 7 (8, 9), RT, Pat II, RT, Pat III, RT, Pat II, RT, p 7 (8, 9). When sleeve measures 17 3/4" from beg, bind off in pat. FINISHING: Sew front to back at shoulders. Mock Turtleneck: With RS facing, using #9 circular needle, pick up and k 72 (76, 80) sts around neck edge including sts on front and back holders. Work in k 2, p 2 rib for 2". Change to #8 circular needle and cont in rib for 2" more. Bind off to gauge. Mark front and back at side edges 11" down from shoulder seam for sleeve placement. Sew sleeves between markers. Sew side and sleeve seams.
