Keeping it in the family.
Sometimes things take a round about way of getting
back to where they belong. As this reader found out....

I was visiting my adopted daughter when we got on the
subject of collecting cook books. She got out her
collection of cook books, some of which she had inherited
from her birth mother. Her birth mother loved going to
yard sales and collecting cook books.

One book from the 40's which had the inscription "From
Theresa to Marge", sent chills down my spine. I asked
my daughter where her birth mother had got the book
and she said at a yard sale in the village of Morrisdale, PA.
As fate would have it, the book was sold by my uncles
who were cleaning out an old pool hall that they had owned
during World War II. Family members had stored items at
the pool hall. The said cook book was from my Aunt,
Theresa Andrejcik-Bristow, to my mother, Margaret
Andrejcik-Yanock. My daughter insisted that I keep the
book. It is one which is highly valued, having a grand story
of how it has passed through the generations.

By the way, we were making nut rolls for the holidays and
they were delicious, made even sweeter by the family story
connected to the book.... Susie Yanock-Schultz-Parks

"Find" of the year: A jar bought in a European antique shop
years ago for $145 just auctioned at Sotheby's in England for
$1,090,000. The anonymous seller said his father bought the
jar because he thought it might be a valuable Ming piece. It was.
The jar dates from the 1465-1487 reign of Emperor Chenghua,
according to Sotheby's Chinese ceramics specialist. More
happy endings:

Could Your Home Movies Be a Collectible Item?
Many of us have home movies sitting in a box in our basement
or attic. Most of these old 8mm, Super8, and 16mm home movies
aren't very interesting to people outside the family, but wait!
Michele Alice has uncovered some examples of historically
interesting home movies up for auction. If your home movies
include a trip to a interesting place or significant event, you
may have a treasure sitting in your closet!

eBay Search Tip from timeBLASTER - A search for canning jars.

This week's HGTV show "Flea Market Finds With The
Kovels" covered antique canning jars. There are lots of
canning jars on eBay, but the search is a bit tricky because
sellers use so many words to describe them. We started
the search with ANY of "mason", "ball", "canning" or
"perfect". You can modify the search below if you'd like
to find other types of jars. Here's a search for the more
valuable green or amber jars.

Paste this line into the eBay Search field:
(mason,ball,canning,perfect) -snow -ad +jar +(green,amber)

This syntax uses TWO "any of" groups, with the word "jar"
as a control. We put in the exclude terms "snow" and "ad"
as examples, if you need exclusions when you modify this
search. Don't let your search exceed 100 characters using
this format.
