Reprinted from Social Network Tips on Dating Cameos Posted by Daye Salander May 7, 2012 5:52:04 In order to even begin to date a cameo, you will need a jeweler’s loupe. Study the piece under the loop carefully. First off, determine whether it is hand carved or machine made. Lasers are now used to create cameos. If the cameo has a snowy appearance to it, it is machine made. Next, try to determine what the cameo is made from. Shell was one of the most popular materials used after 1805. Poured glass cameos would have been considered late Victorian into the early 1900’s. Coral first appeared as cameo’s in the mid-1800’s. Imitation cameo’s were produced as early as the mid 1700’s. They were excellent imitations of classical subjects and portraits of royalty or important figures of the day. As a note, these cameo’s were known as Tassie cameos. The design can also tell a lot about the date of the piece. Floral motifs first became popular during the Victorian Era. Women that were “Roman” looking with long straight noses and often Roman attire could indicate a date prior to 1850. Shorter and upturned noses would mostly likely be the late 1800’s and later. Upswept curls often indicate the 1800’s and short curls, the 1900’s.
