Condition of print: good; colors still fresh; margins partially trimmed; two small wormholes on right side; attached to presentation folder by UR corner. Yoshiiku was one of the best pupils of Kuniyoshi, eventually rivaling his contemporary Yoshitoshi in popularity. After the Meiji restoration he also became popular as a newpaper illustrator. This print illustrates the early use of the new aniline dyes, which became available to printmakers after trade with the West opened up in the 1860s and which would become the standard colors used in prints during the following decades.
