  • Victorian Milk Glass Plate 3 Male Foxes Suits Sit Read Original Paint

Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Manufacturer: Victorian Milk Glass
Fun antique glass plate or dish showing 3 male foxes dressed in suits sitting, reading & talking together. This is the old Victorian milk glass as it is translucent not solid white. It has no manufacturer, designer or country of origin marking as is often the case. We believe this piece dates to the late 1800's from the style, design & material.

This old plate is largely round although the molded design has a pointed outer motif. The fox figures are molded into the glass with wonderful hair/fur details as well as molded hands, feet, tailored suit clothing, etc. The design has two open or reticulated pieces near the top so you could easily hang this with two nails, one in each opening. You can see that this piece originally had hand painted detail accents to the foxes and the outer point design, with what we would guess is 30-50% of the paint still present, so this piece has experienced paint wear over time. You can still see the brown paint on the heads of the foxes and green paint on the outer point details, with a touch of old gold and green paint on some of the clothing.

The backside has a slight rim on which the piece sits and shows a long horizontal mold straw mark across the back center section, which is often commonly seen with Victorian milk glass pieces. Measures 7 1/4 inches greatest top side diameter. There is a molded slightly upward curve to the outer angled decor so that this piece sits about 1/2 inch in height. This vintage glass dish is heavy for its size, weighing almost 15 ounces unpacked.

We've provided 8 images to try and show from varied angles, close-ups, and one image without the camera lighting since the bright light can bland out some of the detail (for example, in the image without the camera light you can see some of the circular lines in the plate section of the glass as made/manufactured). Sometimes the camera light causes white "hot spots" on the glossy surfaces. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Wonderful antique condition but does show its age as expected. Please see note above regarding the hand paint condition. While there are no large chips, cracks or crazing, there are some very tiny edge chips along the outer pointed sections and one small chip on the backside of the plate near one of the points (you don't see any of these when looking at the front or on display). You can see in the images two brown spots of discoloration on one of the green reticulated points between two of the foxes. You may be able to carefully clean these away but we did not attempt to do so since we didn't want to chance washing away some of the paint on this piece. We just did a light overall cleaning for dust and are selling as is/as found. Between the legs of the two foxes on the right there is a small top surface hole (it does not go all the way through the piece) which we think is from a bubble in the glass which popped and could be as made. We don't see any surface scratches, but there could be light surface wear from age we are missing. The open white glass areas front and back have many pin/pit dots, in mold lines, etc., as manufactured. The back side rim on which this antique glass piece sits has an uneven edge as made but also a nearby small chip in one spot.

An unusual find that we see as particularly fun in how it depicts the foxes, kind of like what one sees in children's story books. We think this would make a great addition to any Victorian milk glass collection or a general collection related to foxes and other animals.
