The beginning of the book describes how sewing machines function in general, and provides details on several types of machines in particular. There is an interesting section about the oscillating rotary shuttle and how it works. There is a good deal written on working and adjusting all types of sewing machines. There is a very detailed section on dealing with adjustments for broken needles, broken threads and missed stitches. Much is written on repairing these old machines including fixing and repairing them yourself where parts are hard to come by. This covers adding life to worn shuttles, feed dogs and much more. There is a detailed chapter on many attachments and auxiliary devices including hand cranks, bobbin winder assemblies, ruffler, pleating device and tuck marker. There is also a section on tailor's high speed machines which covers repairs and adjustments.
