Condition: Fair to Good Manufacturer: Ainu, Hokkaido, Japan
Very unique Japanese Hokkaido Ainu wood carved pestle and mortar set with decoration on the sides of the mortar. Ainu are the aboriginal population on the Island of Hokkaido believed to be related to Native Americans. Wood unknown. Unsigned but brought to the USA by an American serviceman in the 1960s. Mortar is 6-1/2" in diameter and 7-1/2" tall and the pestle is 6-3/4" long. Pestle is in very good condition but the mortar has a large crack on its side (from drying out) and the base has a small crack. It might be possible to pull it back together and glue it but seller does not modify or change relics. Circa pre-1960. SOLD AS IS! |
