Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1898
Manufacturer: New York Monthly Company
Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with a four antique photos on each side of the page. On one side the photos are of three ships in the torpedo service, the USS Cushing, USS Ericsson and USS Porter, with a fourth photo showing "the act of adjusting a torpedo in the bow tube, to have in readiness for launching" (per the description underneath). On the other side are four photos labelled as showing "Diversions of Men-of-War's-Men". The photo top left shows the barbershop in a battleship, the one top right shows officers doing a toast, the bottom left photo shows the crew of the USS Brooklyn assembled on deck (please note that there are other photos from the USS Brooklyn in items #1277, 1278, 1279 and 1281), with the final photo bottom right showing sailors watching two of the men boxing (having a boxing match or boxing contest).

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!") and people associated with that war. No copyright dates appear on the book pages. There is a paragraph describing each ship under it's picture.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No tears, major bending, or yellowing. There is very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). There is also the expected uneven edge including page edge chipping where the page was taken from the book.

The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.
