Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1914
Manufacturer: Royal Worcester China
Elegant antique Royal Worcester China ramekin cup & saucer or cup & underplate. White porcelain (these pieces are translucent) with elaborate gold decor on topside rim and gold line encircling cup base and inner saucer. The raised detail on the gold pattern makes it look two-toned, having an interesting design including curlicues or scrolls, leaves, lines & an angular or triangle type object that is reminiscent of an Aladdin's lamp (although it is not exactly one of those).

Both pieces are made and marked by Royal Worcester England, specifically manufactured for Ovington Brothers, New York. We know that these original antique pieces date to 1914 as the year is indicated through the marking system used by this manufacturer and supported by the store name shown. From some research, Royal Worcester used a dot pattern system with their logo to indicate when items were made during part of their history. The 23 dots shown near (to the left and right sides) and below the Royal Worcester name were their means of indicating that these pieces were made in 1914. Further supporting this age is the use of "Brothers" in the store name. The Ovington Brothers of Brooklyn founded their china importing company in 1846, with the word "Brothers" eliminated from their name at some point after 1920.

The round cup has an outward flared rim with a smaller base, with a top outer diameter of about 4 1/16 inches, a base diameter of 2 1/2 inches and sits about 1 1/4 inches in height. The round saucer has a diameter of about 5 3/16 inches, with an inner lowered section for seating the cup. When used together, these pieces sit about 1 1/2 inches in height. Unpacked, the two pieces together weigh about 6 1/2 ounces. On the underside base of these old china pieces there are also some impressed numbers and letters, and they have some some hand painted numbers and letters in a light green (each different) which we think indicates the individual who applied the gold decor, although we don't know that for certain.

We've provided 8 images to show the two ramekin pieces together and separately, with close-ups. These have a wonderful bright golden color for the decor but the camera light reacts to the high reflection, so images shot with the camera light seem darker, although they can help you see the detail better. For that reason we have also included an image shot without the camera light since this better reflects the color you will see in person (and give other perspective on the detail). If you look across all the images you should get a good idea of these pieces, which look even more striking in person than we could show. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

While having lovely overall look, this antique cup & saucer does show evidence of age, as can be expected for something that it is over 100 years old. In particular, the saucer has overall crazing, in some areas showing more spaced large line crazing, and in others very fine close together crazing lines (you can see some of this in one of the unlighted images of the marking on the saucer). The cup also shows some crazing but far less than the saucer, mainly on the underside of the outstretched rim and on the topside on the white near the gold rim decor. Otherwise, these pieces have no chips, cracks or large flaws. There is other minor evidence of age/use/wear/sitting wear, but not bad at all, via some surface wear/dots/rubbed wear, likely some light scratches, etc. There are some tiny stray gold dots from the gold decor application, mainly on underside of saucer base rim and near underside outer rim (there is also a light tan spot near the rim on the backside). The topside gold decor is in terrific shape, with all design elements there and vivid. There is likely some light wear, perhaps light scratches, etc., but nothing jumps out on the intricate design.

A great set ready to display. Would make an elegant way to hold some decadent chocolates for dessert when entertaining.

Please note that we have listed separately other pieces of this pattern for sale (please see our other listings). Should you be interested in purchasing items from more than one listing, please e-mail us prior to inputting the order. The shipping has been entered for each listing separately and will not automatically provide you with the cost savings you would get by shipping multiple pieces/listings together in the same box. We would be pleased to provide that for you.
