Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1940s
Manufacturer: Royal Bayreuth China
Neat find out of a home. This is a vintage china teacup & saucer set marked on the underside of both pieces as made by Royal Bayreuth in the Germany US Zone. This latter indicates these were made following World War II (WW2, WW II) in that portion of the former Germany which was allocated to occupation by the United States (Germany was split up into four occupation zones). The US Zone existed from 1945 to 1949, so these pieces were made during the second half of the 1940's.

Striking set using a predominately black background (white is used for the interior of the cup and the slightly indented center of the saucer where the cup sits) with gold line edge trimming and gold on the outward stretched handle on one side of the cup. There is a large graphic of two roses and a rosebud on one outer side of the cup and on one side of the topside saucer, with a single rose and two rose buds on the other side of the saucer. On the opposing outside of the cup there is a graphic of some rose buds and leaves outlined in gold lines. The roses (and some of the rose buds) are white with highlighting in gray and a red/pink coloring, with gold line drawing of the stems, and the leaves done either in gold or a combination of white, gray & red. The red coloring is not a true "stop sign" red, but more of a muted maroon type, with the pink a medium color.

These pieces are made of china or porcelain (they are translucent). The saucer and cup rims are scalloped. The saucer measures about 5 3/4 inches in diameter and sits about 5/8 inch in height. The cup is a low flat type with a broad top opening having a diameter of 4 inches and a greatest width including the handle of 5 inches. The cup cinches in at the bottom before flaring slightly outward for the base, having a base diameter of about 1 7/8 inches. This cup base is also slightly fluted and has a heavy gold trim. The cup sits almost 2 1/2 inches in height to the top of the handle. With the saucer, the two pieces sit about 2 5/8 inches.

We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles including close-ups and the manufacturer marking. Please note that the camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth surfaces (which you can see move across the images). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. Together these two pieces weigh a little over 7 1/2 ounces unpacked.

Wonderful overall condition with no large chips, cracks or crazing but there are some manufacturer flaws and indication of age. There is a small spot on the saucer rim which on examination with a loupe shows to be 3 very tiny rim flakes that were made in manufacture but then coated with the gold rim paint so you have to look closely to find these (they won't be noticeable on display or in use). There is a similar tiny dot on the saucer rim on the opposite side (again fully covered in gold paint). There is a little bit of gold paint wear, most visible on the outer cup handle (you can see some white spots in the gold here and other rubbed/wear marks), with a touch of gold wear on some of the leaf/stem elements, but the gold is still mainly present on these pieces with 95% still there. While these pieces largely don't look used, there are a few small light surface scratches (you have to look closely at an angle in bright light to see these), some pin/pit dots in the porcelain as made, some dots & light surface wear to the broad black surfaces (not bad), and other general light aging, but these pieces really are in great shape for their age.

A fun addition to any collection of tea cups & saucers or a grouping of Royal Bayreuth china or china pieces made in the Germany U.S. Zone. Would also be an elegant way to enjoy a cup of afternoon tea or coffee!
