Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Circa: 1970's
Manufacturer: Royal Crown Derby China
Lovely antique or vintage cup and saucer made and marked by Royal Crown Derby China, England on the underside base of both pieces. Both pieces also show the pattern name, Derby Posies, and what we think was the year this pattern was introduced, 1930 in Roman numerals (XXX). This could be a tea cup and saucer, but it appears slightly smaller in size than the usual teacup. At the same time, it appears to us slightly bigger in size than we are used to seeing for a demitasse cup. So we are not sure if in reality these pieces were meant to be a teacup and saucer set, demitasse cup & saucer or perhaps a chocolate cup & saucer?

White base porcelain (these pieces are translucent) or bone china. There is a vertical molded soft line form on the saucer and the cup edges, giving these pieces a fluted dimension. They are both intricately decorated with multi-color flowers, leaves & stems, and are trimmed with a gold line on the outer edge of the saucer and top edge of the cup. There is also gold line decor on the one side curved handle. The decor is mainly on the topside of the saucer and exterior of the cup (3 differing design areas on the exterior as you go around the cup). The inside of the cup is white with one smaller flower group on one upper inside portion.

Saucer is largely round (with a fluted or scrolled edge), having a lowered or indented section in the middle for seating the cup, then curving upwards and outwards, measuring about 4 15/16 inches diameter and sitting about 7/8 inch in height. The cup is also basically round with a fluted edge on the top and base. Top opening diameter of the cup is about 2 1/2 inches with a total width to the outside of the handle of about 3 3/8 inches. The cup sits about 2 1/2 inches in height. The two pieces together sit about 2 3/4 inches total height.

Both vintage pieces show the same manufacturer marks on the underside bases in a dark red, "Derby China", followed by a crown and "XO" type mark, then "Royal Crown Derby, English Bone China, Derby Posies, XXX". The saucer also has a "B" while the cup shows a painted "A" in gold and "f" in deep red, and then some green paint by the word "Posies". From some internet research, Royal Crown Derby has made use of a number of mark variations over its history, with this mark appearing to be in use from 1964 to 1975. We don't know when during this period these pieces were made, but think they are not "newer" than 1975 and listed them as 1970's in the title to be conservative regarding the age.

We've provided 8 images to try and show from varied angles & close-ups, including the Derby China mark. The camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth surfaces. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. Together these two pieces weigh about 5 1/2 ounces unpacked.

Wonderful overall vintage condition with no major chips, cracks, crazing or utensil marks. There are a few tiny signs of age/wear, but not bad at all. There are several tiny scratches on the saucer and on the cup exterior (we think these came from cleaning/handling over the years as these pieces don't appear to have been used much if at all to us), a wear dot on the inside lower base of the cup, some stray pin/pit/dark dots, a bit of darkening on the underside rim on which these pieces sit, and other general light age/storage wear, but nothing to worry about here. The floral areas appear to be transfer designs (perhaps with some hand painting on top of the transfer, we're not sure).

This attractive set is ready to display or use, and would make a great addition to any collection of cups & saucers or one related specifically to vintage Royal Crown Derby China.
