This antique sterling spoon is either a mote spoon or a pierced olive spoon and its maker is unknown. It is marked 925/1000 and has a twisted handle that ends in a barbed spike that looks like an arrow and it is slightly curved. The bowl of this ususual spoon is pierced. Mote spoons had several uses. They were usually pierced spoons (like strainers), used to remove tiny bits of debris ("mote") or loose tea leaves from a tea caddy before putting the leaves into a teapot. After pouring brewed tea into a tea cup, they also were used to remove extraneous tea leaves from the cup. The pointed handle was used to push tea leaves back into a clogged spout. This is truly a rare piece of antique silver. Length: 8¼ inches. |
