This is a very nice 19th century gouge chisel marked "S.J. ADDIS CAST STEEL 5 ENGLAND". A very nice medium sweep , No. 5 on the sweep chart, out-channel gouge chisel with a slight arch in the length of the chisel giving the user a better cutting position, sometime call a curved gouge. The steel is very clean, no rust, and measures 5 3/8" long from the sharp cutting edge (out-channel) to the handle. The handle has a good brass ferrule, no cracks, nice looking, very solid, a few dings noted, nice smooth finish, solid, and firmly attached. A top quality chisel that has lasted many years! |
