Circa: mid 1900's Condition: Good+ Manufacturer: Stanley U.S.A.
Offering this nice clean corrigated sole, smooth plane marked "STANLEY MADE IN U.S.A." on the cutter, and "BAILEY NO. 4 MADE IN U.S.A." on the bed. The cap cover is marked "STANLEY" in raised cast lettering. This plane has about 85% original black Japanning intact, a good sharp cutter, no cracks, minor staining, very clean bare metal surfaces, some minor pitting on the cutter blade, but not near the cutting edge. One exception is the chipped off at the top of the side wall near the cap cover area on one side. The chip has not cracked the wall stock, and may have been an original casting void area. The rosewood front knob and rear handle are very nice, solid, with with the heavy varnish finish that Stanley offered in the mid-1900's era, about half of the thick lacquer finish is intact on the tote, more on the front knob. The cap cover is polished, but no nickel plating intact. A ready to use or display plane by a top quality maker! |
