Circa: Circa 1890 Manufacturer: An American Tile Company
This is an attractive pair of matched stove tiles - they feature ladies profiles, and are done in a lovely medium to light blue majolica glaze. Each tile has a center hole - this was one of the methods used to attach the tile to the parlor stove. (The other, more common method, was the use of an outside "lip" on the tile, and a bracket went across the back of the tile on the interior of the stove.)
Each tile measures 3 1/2" in diameter (across the back). The designs are modeled in medium relief. Both tiles show glaze wear and nips, primarily on the higher spots above the foreheads. Please see photos for closeups. They still display very nicely.
Both are unmarked, American, circa 1890. There were only a few companies that made stove tiles - so, they were probably made by either Providential Tile Company, Trent Tile Company, or the Beaver Falls Art Tile Company. (small017)
