Circa: 1892 Manufacturer: Globe Bible Publishing Company
Original book page which shows a photograph with a paragraph of descriptive copy, from the 1892 edition of "Shepp’s Photographs of the World". This book was arranged and explained by James W. Shepp and Daniel B. Shepp, sold by subscription only, and published by Globe Bible Publishing Company, Chicago, Ill. and Philadelphia, Penna. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique original issue of this 1892 book (we guarantee this), with an antique photograph print on one side of the page with the reverse side blank. The old book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately/priced each.
This antique black & white book page photo print is apparently of a Chinese woman whose name we gather is Wong Tai Ken, as this page is labelled "Wong Tai Ken, China" in the paragraph below the photo. This is page #423 from the book (the page number appears in small print under the paragraph of copy).
The paragraph provides what the author viewed as a general description of the Chinese people and the outfit of the individual lady shown. As this is from a book from 1892, the words and manner of description reflect that time in terms of what the author thought to be the case and how things were said. So that there won't be any surprises by the language if you were to purchase this and then read the paragraph, we will detail here what the paragraph says..."The people of China are a thoroughly settled class of agriculturists and traders. They are partially Buddhist, and have a peculiar monosyllabic, uninflected language, with writing consisting of symbols, which represent words, not letters. The photograph represents one of the better class, dressed in a richly made costume after the fashion of her country. Her feet, like all of her race, are extremely small and encased in velvet sandals, with thick wooden soles, which are peculiar to these people."
Vintage black & white photograph, on full page measuring about 8 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. We have scanned the actual book print page into our computer so you can see the condition. Please note, however, because this is a scan and not a photograph of the page, if you click on the option to look at a "close-up" version, the system shows the book page with all kinds of weird lines on the photo that do not exist when you see this in person. Unfortunately, we do not know of a way to correct that....the non-close-up image of the book page is a true representation of the page itself....it looks as one would expect a printed photo to look on a book page.
The antique page itself is an off white/ivory aged color. There is a rough edge where the page was separated from the rest of the book and significant paper tear/paper remains along the right side of the page in the margin area which looks like it came from an initial separation of the page from the one which would have been prior to it in the book. There are also some slight wrinkling/slight page creasing, a bit of outer edge chipping and tiny edge tears, and other expected minor handling wear for a book page, but we believe all this could be easily covered with matting and/or not be noticeable if this piece were to be framed.
We are listing other book photographs from China and many other places around the world. Please see our other individual listings. Would be an interesting addition to a collection related to China or one related to world dress or costumes. Would also just look nice framed and hanging on a wall.
Relative to shipping, please note: While this is a book page/print, this item CAN NOT be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail per the post office. Please do not select this shipping option because we will have to contact you and change the shipping to something else, increasing your postage cost. Also, if you are interested in more than one of these 1892 Shepp’s Photographs of the World book pages, please contact us before placing the order. The shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you). |
