Manufacturer: Glass Bead Jewelry
Lovely vintage costume jewelry necklace which came out of an estate sale/home. This is an all glass bead necklace, about 18 1/2 inches in length, with a two piece, screw together, barrel clasp.
This old necklace is largely turquoise blue in color, with added interest on 5 larger beads in the front which have swirling sparkly copper lines and a multi-color speckled design over their turquoise base color. There are actually 5 types of beads making up this necklace. With the large front beads, there are actually 3 which are round ball beads (about 3/8 inch in width/diameter) and 2 which are oval beads (about 1/2 inch in length). Near and inbetween the large beads there are small angular solid turquoise color beads, with the angular and large beads all separated by tiny gold colored beads. The bulk of the necklace consists of the 5th glass bead type, which are small round beads (each about 1/8 inch in diameter).
From the older home this came out of, as well as the style of the large beads, we believe this necklace dates to the 1960s, but we can't guarantee that, as there is no indication of manufacturer or country of origin on this costume jewelry piece. Our best guess is that the large beads look like handmade lamp work or cane work beads to us, either made in or in the style of Italian Venetian Murano glass beads.
We've provided 7 images from differing angles, including close-ups of the large beads and the barrel clasp. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth glass surfaces. The camera lighting also lightens the color. In person you will see that this is a darker, rich medium turquoise color than it appears in the images (sorry, we did the best we could, it really is a very pretty rich turquoise color). Also, please use the zoom feature to examine closely. This necklace is light in weight, weighing less than one ounce, so it won't feel heavy around your neck when worn.
Lovely overall vintage condition, ready to wear. We do note that there is a slightly indented round white dot spot (measuring a tad less than 1/16 inch in diameter) on one side of one of the oval large beads. This looks to us like some sort of white fill used to fill a hole or chip in the bead. Our guess is that this was done when making the necklace to fix a flaw or error in manufacturing. We never noticed this until doing a very close, fine inspection for this listing, so we don't think it will cause any problems for wearing. You can see in the images that one or two of the smallest round turquoise beads are dark on one end where they meet the next strung bead; this is some black in glass on the ends of these beads as made (only a few of the beads appear to have this). The large beads have some surface variation, such as a small flatter spot on the bead or colored circular lines in the glass, all normal for handmade glass beads. It is likely this vintage piece has other minor use/wear/storage wear, but nothing bad at all. |
