Manufacturer: Orrefors Art Glass
Nifty find, a vintage clear crystal small bowl or candy bowl, which is acid etched as a commemorative piece. This was made by Orrefors Art Glass of Sweden, and has both the Orrefors etched signature on the underside base and still has attached the small, original "Orrefors Sweden" triangular paper label near the lower edge on one side (the label has an animal graphic, we think this may be a seal, we're not sure).
This bowl is a commemorative piece with etching on one side stating, "The Bryn Mawr Hospital, Main Line Health System" (the Bryn Mawr Hospital is located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, in the western Philadelphia suburbs). Based on some research, the hospital network Main Line Health System was created as a grouping of a number of local western suburbs hospitals in 1985, so this piece is no older than that, but we don't know the exact age here. We know it is not brand new and came out of a home, so it is vintage. It is possible this was an award given to a hospital employee or maybe a commemorative given out when the Main Line Health System was created, we don't know.
Believed to be a lead crystal bowl (this does have a "ring" to it when pinged with a fingernail) in what we think is the Orrefors Orion pattern. Stands about 3 1/2 inches in height, shaped like a partially opened flower with outward leaning flower petals, having a greatest width/depth of about 5 1/2 inches, with the petal sides radiating from a smaller base about 1 7/8 inches in width. This is a 6 sided piece with 6 petals having a similar fluting to the outer top edge and strong vertical line connectors in between the petals. The top edge is rounded and smooth. A heavy art glass piece, weighing 28.5 ounces or about 1 3/4 pounds unpacked.
We've provided 8 images showing from varied angles, including close-ups of the Orrefors acid etched marking, paper label and Bryn Mawr marking. Please note that the camera light creates white "hot spot" reflections on the glass. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing, scratches or other visible flaws. It is quite possible that this has some minor age/sitting wear that we are missing, but if there, there is nothing bad at all. This is a wonderful piece in ready to display or use condition.
Beautiful to use as a candy dish or to put on display. Would make a nice gift for anyone connected with Bryn Mawr Hospital or the Main Line Health System, or someone having a collection related to Orrefors, hospitals in general, or the town of Bryn Mawr, Pa. |
