Manufacturer: Donegal Parian China
Lovely small vintage bud vase with a fun Irish or Celtic design. This is a Donegal Parian China (as marked) porcelain piece (it is translucent) with a multi-color design of an Irish Claddagh Ring on two sides. Donegal China is made in Ireland.
The ivory colored base porcelain is molded in a rounded square shape cinches in at the neck and then extends upward and outward in a flower or flower petal type fashion with a slightly scrolled or wavy top rim. The Claddagh Ring decor is printed on two sides in black, with the coloring we think then hand painted in gold, pink, blue and yellow. The other two sides of the bud vase have an ornate molded curves & square design, with the overall vase also having other molded line/ridges decor for a very pretty and delicate look. The vintage vase stands 4 inches tall and is 2 inches deep/wide. It weighs 2 ounces unpacked.
This thin porcelain construction and coloring seems reminiscent of Belleek China, which is also made in Ireland. From some internet research, Belleek is also sometimes referred to as Belleek Fine Parian China. Parian china is a type of bisque porcelain that has been made to imitate marble. Belleek Pottery actually acquired Donegal Parian China as a subsidiary in 2007. We obtained this piece out of an older home and believe it dates older than that (partly because there is no reference to Belleek on this piece), although we don't know exactly when it was made.
We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles. Please note that the camera lighting causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth surfaces, changes some of the ring coloring a bit and blands out some of the molded detail. So we have also included some images shot without the camera lighting as alternatives. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Excellent condition with no chips, cracks, crazing or major issues. This piece is clean inside and out, all paint/decor there, so we are not sure it was ever used, perhaps just kept on display. If you look closely at an angle in bright light, you can see that there is some age spotting on the gold painted ring on both sides (standing in normal light this looks just fine, but we've shown this in some images). As made, the hand painted coloring sometimes does not fill the entire black outlined area, as with the green paint on the crown on the ring images on both sides. There may be a touch of minor surface wear from age/cleaning, but nothing is jumping out at us. There is a touch of wear to the underside base on which this piece sits, as expected.
A terrific piece in great shape to add to your Irish or Ireland or Celtic related collection, or just a great gift for someone interested in that heritage. Maybe also a fun "box" or container in which to give someone a Claddagh ring! |
