Circa: 1914 Manufacturer: Royal Worcester China
Elegant antique ramekin cup & saucer or ramekin dish with under plate. Both pieces are marked on the underside bases as made by Royal Worcester England, specifically manufactured for Ovington Brothers, New York.
We are listing here 2 sets of this ramekin cup & saucer, identically marked and in similar condition. Each of these two seats are priced each or priced separately. We are also listing other pieces of this pattern as separate items for sale (please see our other listings). Should you be interested in purchasing more than one set or a combination of listings, please e-mail us prior to inputting the order. The shipping has been entered for each set or listing separately and will not automatically provide you with the cost savings you would get by shipping multiple pieces/listings together in the same box. We would be pleased to provide that for you.
This ramekin set dates from 1914, with the year indicated by the manufacturer and supported by the store name. From some research, Royal Worcester used a dot pattern system with their logo to indicate when items were made during part of their history. The 23 dots shown near and below the Royal Worcester name were their means of indicating that these pieces were made in 1914. These 23 dots are clearly shown on the bottom of the cup or dish, with a few of the dots blurred or incomplete on the underside of the saucer or underplate, but you can tell this is the number of dots and date they were indicating. Further supporting this age is the use of the word "Brothers" in the store name, as shown on both pieces. The Ovington Brothers of Brooklyn founded their china importing company in 1846. "Brothers" was eliminated from their name at some point after 1920.
White base porcelain (these pieces are translucent) with an ornate pattern in gold at the outer rims and a thin gold line around the outer base of the cup and rimming where the cup sits on the saucer (the inner portion near this line on the saucer is lowered for the cup to sit nicely). The detail on the gold pattern makes it look two-toned, having an interesting design including scrolls, leaves, lines & an angular or triangle type object that is reminiscent of an Aladdin's lamp (although it is not exactly one of those).
The vintage round saucer has a diameter of about 5 1/8 inches and sits 1/2 inch in height. The round cup has an outward flared rim with a smaller base, with a top outer diameter of about 4 1/16 inches, a base diameter of 2 7/16 inches and sits about 1 3/8 inches in height. Together the two pieces sit about 1 5/8 inches in height. Unpacked, the two pieces weigh a bit over 7 ounces. On the underside bases of both pieces there are also some impressed numbers (either fully there or only partially readable), with the underside of the cup and/or saucer having some hand painted numbers in a light green (which we think indicates the individual who applied the gold decor, although we don't know that for certain).
We've provided 8 images to show one set of these antique china pieces together and separately, with close-ups of the manufacturer marking and gold design. These have a wonderful bright golden color for the decor. However, the camera light reacts to the high reflection, so images shot with the camera light seem darker, although they can help you sometimes see the detail better. For that reason we have also included images shot without the camera light since they better reflect the color you will see in person. If you look across all the images you should get a good idea of this piece, which looks even more striking in person than we could show. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks, crazing across all pieces (one cup has a tiny flake on the underside rim on which the piece sits, nothing unusual or noticeable in use or on display). On some pieces, we can see some scratches if you hold at an angle in bright light (not bad, but if you go looking you can see these, nothing that jumps out at you when sitting on a table or on display). On some pieces, as made we can see some dots/pin dots/dark dots in the white porcelain (not bad). The gold is in overall terrific shape, brilliant coloring. The major outer intricate band of gold is fully there on all pieces, showing a touch of wear/darkening in some minor spots but nothing bad at all. On the saucers the inner gold circle line shows a little wear, but is over 95% still there. The underside base rims of on which these sit show some expected spotting/darkening from time, as well as some tiny stray gold dots on the undersides from the gold painting process. Really nothing to worry about here at all.
Lovely antique ramekin cup & saucer sets to use or add to your collection. |
