Manufacturer: National Biscuit Company
Nifty find out of a home. This is an old advertising tin, a vintage box in which cookies were originally sold. It is a 2 separate piece, top and bottom, rectangular box labelled on the lid, "NATIONAL BISCUIT COMPANY". There is no other wording or indication of manufacturer or country of origin on this antique sales package. There is no date on the box, but we believe this piece to date to the early 1900s, or first quarter of the 1900s or 20th Century, so it may be an antique tin.
Made of metal or tin (this piece sticks to a magnet), showing expected tarnishing and age. Basic mottled silver color, with lighter and darker spots due to the tarnish. Measures 7 1/8 inches long x 2 3/4 inches wide or tall and sitting 7/8 inch in height with two pieces together/closed. There are no hinges on this piece, it was made to be two separate pieces so someone would lift the lid fully off the bottom. The bottom piece shows the corners were formed by folding over an extra tab of tin onto the adjacent side. These likely were soldered in place, as all tabs/corners appear firm. The top piece does not have these tabs for the corners. The top side pieces just fold down and are curved on their lower edges so the corners are not "attached to each other" but rather you can see a space between where the pieces fold down. The brand name is impressed into the metal in a double line lettered fashion, so you can read it backwards on the underside of the top piece of the box. Two pieces fit together nicely and can easily be separated. Weighs 2.2 ounces unpacked.
We've provided 8 images to show from differing angles, both with and without the camera lighting. The camera light reflection on the metal changes the look or coloring to the piece as is often the case with metal items, while the images shot without the light make things appear yellower. The true color you will see in person is somewhat between these two (sorry, we did the best we could to show this). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Excellent vintage used condition, with no chunks missing, breaks, cracks, rust or large major flaws. As stated earlier, the exterior shows the spotted darkening or tarnishing as to be expected. We have not cleaned (other than simple wiping) or shined and are selling as is/as found. We see one small impressed dent on the underside of the base (you can see this area on the inside base images). There are a few other much shallower dot impressions on the lid, etc., but not bad at all. The aged box has retained its shape well, with just a bit of outward bending on the top piece in the corners from lifting the top on and off. Many use/age/wear line scratches on both exterior pieces that you can see when viewing closely in bright light, but none that jump out at you in normal viewing or on display. Other general expected wear/aging, but this antique advertising box has really aged well.
Would make a terrific addition to any collection of baking or cooking tins or collectibles, or a nice piece on display in general or as part of an overall advertising or food tin collection. |
