Manufacturer: Wood Sewing Items
This is an unusual vintage or antique all wood sock darner or darning egg. What is different here is that one side was purposely carved or sanded to be flat or flattened as made, so that this sits fine on a table and will not roll off. We don't see ones made this way very often but it provides a definite help when used and makes this a different addition to any collection of these sock darners.
A dark brown wood color, measuring about 5 3/4 inches long, about 1 3/4 inches in greatest width and sitting on a table with a maximum height of about 1 1/2 inches. This antique sewing collectible weighs slightly over 2 1/2 ounces unpacked.
We don't know what type of wood this old sock darner is made of. It was made in two pieces, one for the handle and one for the egg or darner rounded end (they are firmly attached to each other but if you hold the bottom egg still you can rotate the handle without moving the bottom).
We have shown 8 images shot from different angles. The camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth surfaces, which are likely coated with paint and a clear shiny varnish. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Vintage used condition that shows its age and use with lots of surface wear/use wear evident, mainly on the egg end. As you can see in the images, the top surface on the egg shows many roundish spots where the top layer of paint has been worn/chipped away. There is also paint worn away on the outer edges of the flat surface this sits on. The lower rounded end of the egg has a large dark/black area which covers perhaps 1/3rd of the egg, with paint/general wear to this. It looks to us like the egg darner might have been painted black under the top dark brown, we're not sure. The darner shows other overall wear via pitting, scratches, rubbed spots, surface wear, several white areas, etc. There is a tiny hole in the handle end where perhaps there once was a hook for hanging, we're not sure. But none of this is unexpected for a vintage used piece. All this adds to the character of this piece, the believeability of age and neat used look.
A fun piece that would make a great addition to any collection of sock darners, vintage sewing items or sewing collectibles, or one of great old wooden pieces or kitchen and household collectibles overall.
Please note that we have many other sewing, wood and kitchen items listed separately for sale. If you wish to purchase more than one, please e-mail us before placing the order since the shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you). |
