Publisher: Vintage Playing Cards Boxes
Fun find out of an older home. This is a vintage collectible box for storing 2 decks of playing cards. We do not know what artist, company or country of origin this box hails from as there are no markings.
Lovely wood box with outer measurements of 4 9/16 inches in width x 3 inches in height x 2 3/4 inches in depth. We don't know the type of wood here. The top is nicely carved with the 4 playing card symbols (Spade, Diamond, Heart & Clover) with geometric ornamentation around these. There is additional carving on the lower portion or base part of the box on three sides (not on the back side, the underside base is also plain). Box lid is hinged with two inset metal hinges seen on the back side.
Lid firmly attached to box and firmly closes. The interior is divided into two compartments for storing two decks of playing cards on their sides (no playing cards are included with this box). Box is likely stained with a nice, rich medium reddish wood color with some variation to the staining. Interior compartments are a light wood color, same with the interior of the lid. Each interior compartment opening measures about 3 5/8 inches x 13/16 inch, with a depth of about 2 1/16 inches. Collectible playing card box weighs about 6.2 ounces unpacked.
We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles. In most images the camera lighting makes it seem like there is a white outlining to the carvings, but that is not the case in person, that is just how the light bounces into/from the carved areas. In person you will see the lovely brown wood coloring with the dark outlining for the carving. Also, please note that the color of the box is darker and richer in person than the more orange color the camera presents. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Wonderful condition, ready to use and enjoy, with some evidence of age/use/wear but not bad at all. You can see in one image that there are two darkened rectangular spots on the underside base (one darker than the other but next to each other) which we are guessing came from sales stickers that likely were once on this box in the past (there are no stickers there now). In this underside corner tip area there is a tiny diagonal wood crack. Also in the images of the box back side you can see a number of pin/pit dot/dot scarring and scraping spots (a bit of lemon oil or wood stain would likely hide these from view but we have left as found and are selling as is). In the two side images they suggest a similar bit of side wear/scarring but that is not there in person, these look fine, we think those are remains from the Swiffer we used to dust the box prior to photographing and we missed seeing them then (sorry). In the image of the opened front of the box, you can see a tiny nick along the right front rim but this appears natural to the wood here and was there when the box was made as the tiny nick is filled by the wood stain. There is some other minor wear, age wear or use wear, such as a few other occasional tiny scratches, but nothing bad here at all.
A great gift for someone with whom you play card games, or a nice addition for a collection of older, interesting playing cards and decks. |
