Circa: 1914 Manufacturer: Royal Worcester China
Elegant pair of antique Royal Worcester China ramekin cups only, no saucers. White porcelain (these pieces are translucent) with elaborate gold decor on topside rim and gold line encircling base. The raised detail on the gold pattern makes it look two-toned, having an interesting design including curlicues or scrolls, leaves, lines & an angular or triangle type object that is reminiscent of an Aladdin's lamp (although it is not exactly one of those).
Both pieces are made and marked by Royal Worcester England, specifically manufactured for Ovington Brothers, New York. We know that these original antique pieces date to 1914 as the year is indicated through the marking system used by this manufacturer and supported by the store name shown. From some research, Royal Worcester used a dot pattern system with their logo to indicate when items were made during part of their history. The 23 dots shown near (to the left and right sides) and below the Royal Worcester name were their means of indicating that these pieces were made in 1914. Further supporting this age is the use of "Brothers" in the store name. The Ovington Brothers of Brooklyn founded their china importing company in 1846, with the word "Brothers" eliminated from their name at some point after 1920.
The round cups have an outward flared rim with a smaller base, each with a top outer diameter of about 4 1/16 inches, a base diameter of 2 1/2 inches and sit about 1 1/4 inches in height. Unpacked, the two pieces together weigh about 6 ounces. On the underside base of one cup there are also some impressed numbers and letters, with the other cup having one partial impressed spot. Both old pieces also have some some hand painted numbers and letters in a light green (each different) which we think indicates the individual who applied the gold decor, although we don't know that for certain.
We've provided 8 images, showing the two cups together and separately. These cups have a wonderful bright golden color for the decor but the camera light reacts to the high reflection, so images shot with the camera light seem darker, although they can help you sometimes see the detail better. For that reason we have also included some images shot without the camera light since they better reflect the color you will see in person (and give other perspective on the detail). If you look across all the images you should get a good idea of these pieces, which look even more striking in person than we could show. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Lovely overall condition for both pieces, with no major chips, cracks or crazing. Given that these pieces are over 100 years old, there is minor age/use/sitting wear, but not bad at all. On the interior base of the cups we can see minor wear with some scratches, surface wear/rubbed spots, and on one cup along the inner lower base rims there is some gray dotting that we believe may be from silverware use (we couldn't get these to show in the images, not bad at all, but there tucked into the inner circular lower base where it meets the side wall). The underside bases show expected darkening wear with some tiny pin dot indents. The topside gold decor is in terrific shape, with all design elements there and vivid. There is likely some light wear, perhaps light scratches, etc., but nothing jumps out on the intricate design. We do note a tiny grey line spot on the white near the gold line trim on one cup (if you look very closely you can see this in the 5th & 6th images), with some feathering to the inner edge of the gold design along the white on the other cup (this also can be seen if you look closely in the 7th & 8th images). We also see a tiny hairline near this feathering on the white (but not in the nearby gold design)...we think this was all done in manufacture.
A great set ready to use or display. Would make an elegant way to hold some decadent chocolates for dessert when entertaining.
Please note that we have listed separately other pieces of this pattern for sale (please see our other listings). Should you be interested in purchasing items from more than one listing, please e-mail us prior to inputting the order. The shipping has been entered for each listing separately and will not automatically provide you with the cost savings you would get by shipping multiple pieces/listings together in the same box. We would be pleased to provide that for you. |
