Manufacturer: Royal Crown Derby China
Lovely lid for the Royal Crown Derby Olde Avesbury pattern box, trinket box or cigarette box. This is a vintage piece which came out of a home and they had the lid only, no base, but perhaps you are looking for a lid or to replace the lid for a base that you already own.
Topside this has the lovely pattern of birds in a tree along with flowers, branches & leaves, done largely in earth tone colors of brown, yellow, red, green & pink with gold line trim around the outer top edge. This lid is slightly domed, curving upward from the sides, measuring about 1/2 inch in total height at the highest part when sitting flat on a table. The lid is a rounded rectangular shape with curved corners and has a smaller, lowered base rim to fit nicely into the base of the box. This looks to have been made with a brown transfer design having hand painting for the other colored and gold areas.
About 4 1/4 inches in length and 3 11/16 inches in width for the longest, upper portion measurements. The inner lower base is about 3 11/16 inches in greatest length and 3 1/8 inches in width. This vintage box lid piece is porcelain or bone china as it is translucent. It is a nice white base china, fully white on the underside. Weighs about 3 ounces unpacked.
The under base is fully marked with the Royal Crown Derby logo, under which it states "Made in England" and the pattern name, "Olde Avesbury". There are two nearby markings in a dark orangey red color, one is only a partial mark while the second seems to be "A13" or "A73" with a red "X" underneath.
We've provided 8 images to show from different angles and close-ups, including of the manufacturer marking. Please note that the camera light creates white "hot spot" reflections on the smooth china surfaces, you can see these move across the different images. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Wonderful condition, with the top surface and sides in excellent shape with no major flaws. We do note one small chip on the underside, inner box rim, in the upper left corner on our underside images, about 1/8 inch greatest width. This is hard to see on the image shot with the camera light, so the last image is shot without the light to try and help you see this small inner chip better. It is not a big deal, nothing anyone will see in use or on display, but you should know this is there. No other chips, cracks, crazing, scratches, major color loss that we can see, with the colored painting and gold lines in great shape. There are some pit/pin dots in the porcelain as made. Tucked into the underside inner lower edges/corners is some dirt and dust along with a brown pin dot, so this could use a gentle cleaning. It is possible this has some slight other wear due to age, handling and cleaning, but nothing we see nor believe is a problem. |
