Circa: 1940 Manufacturer: Golden Gate International Exposition
Lovely highly collectible World's Fair item out of a home. This is from the 1939-1940 San Francisco Golden Gate International Exposition World's Fair in California. An eye-catching jewelry pin in the shape of a sailing clipper ship, intended to be the Santa Maria since that is spelled out on the ship front side. There is also a round insignia having the 1940 date along with "Golden Gate International Exposition" and "San Francisco Bay" on it.
This vintage collectible is molded metal, not a flat pin, with a curve to it to show that the ship is sailing. It is a highly reflective, shiny gold tone in color (but not real gold), with green highlighting for the ocean waters at the base and white background coloring on the worlds fair insignia. There is a large Maltese Cross on the largest ship sail, with smaller crosses on two mast top flags.
Measures about 1 3/4 inches in height and about 1 1/4 inches in width, weighing about .26 ounces or 7.4 grams. One image shows the pin alongside a quarter for size comparison. We do not know the metal type but it could be brass since a magnet does not stick to this. There is no manufacturer or country of origin marking on this pin, pinback or brooch. It is signed in that the fair is noted on the piece, but not the artist or company who made it
We've provided 8 images to show from varied angles as the shiny surfaces cause strong white "hot spots" from the camera light. If you look across the images you will see that these white spots move around on the piece, so there is no gold coloring missing. We've included closeups to help with viewing detail and condition. Please examine all images closely, using the zoom feature.
Very nice condition, highly displayable and wearable, as the older C clasp closure appears to work fine. We don't see any chips, cracks, pieces missing or major flaws, but there is evidence of age, use, storage wear. On close examination there are a number of surface scratches, rubbed/wear areas, some discoloration spots, etc., but nothing bad nor that distracts from the piece, nor anything unexpected for an older piece of this age.
A great find not often seen.
Please note that we will also be listing another collectible souvenir from this 1939-1940 San Francisco World's Fair. If you are interested in both pieces, we'd be pleased to ship them together to save you on postage. The system is set up to quote shipping for each piece as if shipped separately and won't automatically provide the discounted postage. Please email us using the question button prior to entering the order and we would be pleased to calculate that for you. |
