Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: Late 1800's
Condition: Good+
Manufacturer: Ashcroft Mfg. Co.
This is a nice antique, heavy duty pipe tongs or wrench first patented in this design by Acme in 1880. Though these tongs look more like giant pliers, the patented design basically features a heavy duty pivot, and two jaws, one the has a hardened steel cube the turned at a 45 degree angle actually grips the pipe, while the L-shaped jaw holds the pipe up against the gripper jaw. This wrench is in the Antique and Unusual Wrenches collector's book by Schulz on page 58 and is number 733. This one is not marked by the maker, so I am using Schulz's book to date and name the maker in this case. This wrench/tongs is marked "2" only. It is an adjustable wrench, for pipe up to about 2.75" diameter. It is 23.5" long overall, no rust, not much paint left on it, but not damaged. It is useable in present condition. An interesting patented design from the late 1800's era. I was told this wrench was used on local oil wells and drilling rigs in this part of Ohio.
