This poignant illustration shows Columbia with patriotic adornments all around the scene. Columbia is standing with her hand on the shoulder of a wounded negro soldier in uniform. The soldier is holding his kepi in one hand while he proudly stands wearing the uniform of the Union Army with his U.S. belt plate clearly visible. He is standing on two crutches as one of his legs has been amputated above the knee. Executed by the famous illustrator Thomas Nast. Light age toning in the border areas. 10 x 15 1/4.
