Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: 1800's
Condition: Good
Manufacturer: not marked
This is a nice 19th Century fruitwood marking gauge or scribe with a wonderful patina. It was used, has some scratches, and dings, but looks very nice. The 18" bar has a well marked rule allowing 5/8" to 18" dimension to be set. The scibe is in good shape, can be replaced by removing 2 screws. The guide section has an interesting cast screw to hold the guide in place, it can be tighten to secure the guide in place. The thread are in good shape, but there is some evidence of an old repair to the thread as I can see an insert in that area, it's possible that this was original and the insert has the same patina as the rest of the tool. There is a steel plated surface on the inside of the guide slot, which has worked well to minimize the wear on the tool, overall the guide slide is a bit loose, not bad. There is a hole for hanging on the wall that also appears to be original. This tool was purchased from a local antique tool museum where it had been on display for several years.
