This is a very nice, turn of the century peg shaped awl handle, featuring the steel collet type chuck, so the steel tip is removable, and other tips can be used as well.  The tips need to be around .10" diameter to fit into this chuck to best.  These tool handles often came with tiny wrenches that would fit on the threaded sleeve of the chuck, we don't have the wrench, and find a small adjustable wrench works just fine. The wood appears to be fruitwood, most likely applewood, and is in very good shape. This style is much like the Stanley No. 7 sewing awl haft, as it is 3.7 inches long. We note that we see a few dings on the end of the peg cap, but just minor, no crack or chips. The awl comes with 3 tips, one is a sewing needle with eyelit, two is a scratch pin with a small slot screwdriver at the opposide end, and the third is a angled shaped end tool that would cut a small hole into leather or other material I suppose.  A nice tool for sewing of canvas, leather and other heavy fabrics!
