Superintendent of Army Nurses during the War Between the States

(1802-87) Born in Hampden, Maine, she was a school teacher, author of children's books, an activist on behalf of the indigent insane who through a vigorous program of lobbying state legislatures and the U.S. Congress, created the first generation of American mental asylums, and during the Civil War was the Superintendent of Army Nurses.
