War Date Document Signed

(1811-71) Born in Hull, Mass., he fought in the Mexican War as a captain of the 6th U.S. Infantry. On May 14, 1861, he was commissioned major of the 10th U.S. Infantry, and was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 24, 1862. He was commissioned into the 18th U.S. Infantry on January 21, 1863, and commissioned into the 14th U.S. Infantry on Feb. 16, 1865, with rank of colonel. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general on March 13, 1865. During the Civil War he was cited for gallantry at the battles of Gaines' Mill, Va., Malvern Hill, Va., and Antietam, Md., where he commanded the 2nd brigade, 2nd division, 5th corps, Army of the Potomac.

Notice of Discharge Signed: 7 1/2 x 9 3/4, in ink. Office U.S. Military Commander, Madison, Wis., Dec. 31st, 1863. Sir: The following named soldier of your Co. have been discharged by me, on Surgeon's Certificate of Disability, on the date opposite their respective names. Augustus McAllister, Private, Dec. 14, 1863. Very Respectfully yours &c, Chas. S. Lovell, Lt. Col. 18th Inf. To Commanding Officer, Co. I, 31st Regt. Wis. Inf. Vols. Very fine.
