(1835-79) Born in Walden, Vermont, he was a 25 years old lawyer when he enlisted on September 11, 1861, as a Captain, and was commissioned into Co. G, 4th Vermont Infantry. He was promoted to major, July 18, 1862; lieutenant colonel, November 5, 1862; wounded on May 5, 1864, in the battle of the Wilderness; promoted to brevet brigadier general, August 1, 1864, for gallantry in the Shenandoah Valley campaign.

War Date Document Signed: 8 1/4 x 10 1/2, imprinted form, filled out in ink. Special Requisition. Received at Camp in the Field, Sept. 20, 1864, of Lt. W.K. Russell, Act. Quartermaster, 4th Vt. Vols. For infantry coat, shelter tents, trowsers, wool blankets, shirts, drawers, knapsacks, haversacks and canteens, needed for the men in Co. K. Signed twice, A.W. Fisher, Capt., 4th Vt. Vols., and signed, Approved Geo. P. Foster, Col. Comdg. Light age toning. Very fine.

Abial W. Fisher, was a resident of Danville, Vt., when he enlisted on September 12, 1861, as a 1st lieutenant, and was commissioned into the 4th Vermont Infantry. He was promoted to captain, November 5, 1862; and wounded on May 5, 1864, in the battle of the Wilderness, Va. He was mustered out of service, September 30, 1864.

The 4th Vermont Infantry saw action at Williamsburg, Savage's Station, White Oak Swamp, Crampton's Gap, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek.
