War Date Document Signed

(1815-1905) Born in Amelia County, Va., he came from a military family, his father fighting in the Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812, and his three brothers all graduating from West Point. He was commissioned 2nd lieutenant, 2nd U.S. Dragoons, Oct. 13, 1837; was promoted to 1st lieutenant, Jan. 1, 1839; captain, Aug. 31, 1843; and major, June 14, 1858. He served in the campaigns against the Florida Seminoles, and was brevetted for gallantry in the Mexican War battles of Palo Alto, and Resaca de la Palma. In August 1861, he was commissioned brigadier general of volunteers. He commanded a brigade in the 4th Corps, Army of the Potomac, during the siege of Yorktown. In June 1862, he was appointed chief of cavalry at the camp of instruction near Annapolis, Md., where he rendered good service. Afterwards, he served as president of a general court martial in St. Louis, and of a board for the examination of invalid officers at Annapolis. He commanded the 4th U.S. Cavalry in 1864-65. After the war he remained in the army and served at various frontier posts and retired on Dec. 15, 1870.

Lists the commanding officers, regiments, etc. Among the commanders is Colonel David B. Birney, commanding the 23rd Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers.
