(1815-93) Born in Washington, D.C. He graduated from the Norwich Military Academy in 1832, and from West Point in the class of 1836, and served in the Seminole War. He fought in the Mexican War; was wounded, and earned brevets for gallantry, in the battles of Cerro Gordo and Chapultepec. During the Civil War, 1861-63, he served as Inspector of Contract Arms and Ordnance Stores. Promoted to lieutenant colonel, on June 1, 1863, he was appointed commander of the Watervliet Arsenal, a post he held for the remainder of the war. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general, on March 13, 1865, for faithful and meritorious service in the Ordnance Department. He remained in the U.S. Army after the war and retired on June 1, 1881.
