War Date Document Signed

(1816-94) Graduated in the West Point class of 1838. Almost 50% of this class attained the rank of full general on either side, Union or Confederate, during the Civil War. He served in the Florida Seminole War, in the Mexican War, and was an instructor at West Point. At the outbreak of the War Between The States, while a Major in the 5th U.S Infantry, he was captured on duty in Texas and not paroled until August 1862. He was appointed Brig. Gen. U.S. Vols. in Oct. 1862, and served in Kentucky, Tennessee, and North Alabama, where he resisted the invasions of John Bell Hood, Joseph Wheeler, Nathan Bedford Forrest and Philip D. Roddey. Granger later was in command at Huntsville, Decatur and Stevenson, Alabama.

Certificate To Be Given To Volunteers At The Time Of Their Discharge To Enable Them To Receive Their Pay, &c. For a private in the 10th Indiana Infantry who was discharged on a surgeon's certificate of disability. The document gives all of his biographical info, as well as his muster and pay info. Signed, R.S. Granger, Maj. 5th Infty. Commanding, at Louisville, Ky., Aug. 12, 1862. The document has also been signed by a paymaster along the right edge. Light wear. Very fine.
