House of Representatives U.S.,
Washington, D.C., August 30th, 1893

My Dear General,

In reply to your letter of the 9th inst., I will say that the speech of Mr. Lincoln from which the extract referred to by you was taken, was made by him at Springfield, Illinois in December 1839, in a Political Discussion participated in by Stephen A. Douglas, and Josiah Lamborn, an eminent lawyer, and Democratic politician at that time of Illinois, and by Mr. Lincoln. I now have the original pamphlet copy of the speech from which I published the extract shown you.

But for absence from the city when your letter was received I should have replied to it on earlier date. I am,

Very respectfully yours,
Thos. J. Henderson

[To] General Robert P. Kennedy
Bellfontaine, Ohio

Light age toning and wear. Slight ink feathering. Very desirable content with mention of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas during their early days in Springfield, Illinois.

Footnote: Josiah Lamborn, who was mentioned in this letter, served as the Attorney General of Illinois, 1840-43.
