(1826-1905) Born in Bledsoe's Lick, Tennessee. Fought in the Mexican War as 1st lieutenant of the 3rd Tennessee Infantry. Served in the Tennessee House of Representatives, 1849-51. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned colonel of the 2nd Tennessee Infantry. He saw action at 1st Manassas, and Shiloh, where he was badly wounded. Promoted to brigadier general on Oct. 2, 1862. He also fought with distinction as a brigade commander in the Tullahoma campaign, the battle of Chickamauga, and the Chattanooga campaign. Promoted to major general, Feb. 24, 1864, he was given command of a division in the Army of Tennessee which he led during the Atlanta and 1865 Carolina's campaign, eventually surrendering with the army at Greensboro, Tenn. During the course of the war, Bate was wounded 3 times and had 6 horses shot out from under him. He returned to politics in his post war years, being elected Governor of Tennessee in 1882, and re-elected in 1884. He later served as United States Senator from 1887-1905.

Bate, Governor of the State of Tennessee, hath hereunto set his hand and caused the Great Seal of the State to be affixed at Nashville, on the 29 day of June in the year of our Lord 1885, and of the Independence of the United States the 109th. BY THE GOVERNOR: Wm. B. Bate. Also has the signature of John Allison, Secretary of State. Embossed Great Seal of the State of Tennesse at left.

Much more content including the specifics of the tract of land which has been signed by C. Craft, Surveyor of Putnam County. The reverse of the document bears the signature of S.E. Cunningham certifying that this land grant has been correctly recorded. Light age toning and wear.
