(1787-1854) Born in Northboro, Mass., he graduated from Yale College in 1812, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Worcester, Mass. Served as U.S. Congressman, 1825-34. Served as Governor of Massachusetts, 1834-35, and 1841-43. Served as U.S. Senator, 1835-41, and 1845-53. He was chairman of the Committee on Commerce.
