(1782-1866) He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1802. Served as U.S. Marshal for Ohio, 1807-12; fought in the War of 1812; served in the U.S. Army, 1813-14, attaining the rank of brigadier general; was Governor of Michigan Territory, 1813-31; U.S. Secretary of War, 1831-36, under President Andrew Jackson; Minister to France, 1836-42; U.S. Senator, 1845-48, and 1849-57; was chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs; served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the 33rd Congress; and was U.S. Secretary of State, 1857-60. He resigned the latter post in protest when the Buchanan administration refused to reinforce the forts of Charleston, S.C. on the eve of the Civil War.

Included is an authentic, original 1862 dated portrait engraving with printed autograph. Made from the original painting by Chappel. Published by Johnson, Fry & Co., N.Y., 1862. 7 1/2 x 8 1/2. Top is trimmed. This does not affect the subject. Light age toning and wear. Very fine likeness.
