United States Senator from New Jersey

(1826-83) He attended the common schools of New Brunswick, N.J., engaged in the coal and iron business, and moved to Vicksburg, Miss., where he engaged in business. He moved back to New Jersey and settled in Jersey City in 1852. He served as President of the Morris and Essex Railroad. He served in the New Jersey State Assembly in 1859, and the New Jersey State Senate in 1862-63. He served as Governor of New Jersey, 1869-72, and was U.S. Senator from New Jersey, 1875-81. He served as Chairman of the Committee on Military Affairs.
