(1820-87) Born in Winchendon, Mass., he graduated from Yale in 1844. Served in the Massachusetts State Senate in 1850, and the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, 1853-55. Was a U.S. Congressman, 1863-71, which included the 40th U.S. Congress, the President Andrew Johnson impeachment congress; served as the Governor of Massachusetts, 1872-74; and U.S. Senator, 1874-75.
