Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: LATE 1800'S
Condition: Very Good
Manufacturer: W. BUTCHER
This is a nice clean antique 5/32" (.16") wide x 9.5" long tanged heavy duty mortise chisel marked "W. BUTCHER" on the steel. The steel length alone is 3.75". Perhaps the best quality tool steel available in the late 1800's, this is a fine example. It came with a group of 19th century English chisels that I purchased together, with the British export symbols also marked on the steel opposite the maker's mark (a circle logo with a arrow with the point, pointing at an + shaped symbol). Nice quality cast steel, good solid hardwood handle, sharp and ready to use. The handle is very solid with a few dings, a slight grain separation noted but is not cracked to the end or ferrule.
