Severely wounded and incapacitated during the Seven Days battles

(1816-71) Graduated in the West Point class of 1837. He fought in the Seminole and Mexican Wars, winning a brevet for gallantry in the latter. At the outbreak of the Civil War he commanded the U. S. Arsenal at Augusta, Ga. which he surrendered to Rebel forces. Resigning his commission in the U. S. Army, he was commissioned Colonel 1st Maryland Infantry leading them at 1st Manassas. Promoted to brigadier general, he served with distinction under Stonewall Jackson in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign, and in the beginning of the 7 Days Battles around Richmond in which he was severely wounded and incapacitated for many months. Commissioned a major general, he later commanded the Department of Richmond and later was General Hood's Chief of Artillery in the Tennessee campaign.

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Half view in uniform with rank of brigadier general and wearing epaulettes. Blind stamp imprint on the front mount, Bendann Bros., Balto. Uncommon.
