War Between the States

(1829-76) At the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned captain in the 8th Missouri Infantry, with his older brother Morgan L. Smith, the colonel. Saw action in the capture of Fort Donelson and was commended by his superiors. At Shiloh, he participated in some of the battle's heaviest fighting. He took part in the Corinth campaign, and was promoted to colonel of the regiment after his brother's promotion to brigadier general. He commanded a brigade in the 13th Corps in the attack on Chickasaw Bluffs in Dec. 1862, and a brigade in the 15th Corps in the capture of Arkansas Post in Jan. 1863. He saw action in the Vicksburg campaign, and at Jackson, Miss., and was promoted to brigadier general, Aug. 4, 1863. During the Chattanooga campaign, he was seriously wounded in the assault on Missionary Ridge. He served under General William T. Sherman during the Atlanta campaign commanding a division in the 17th Corps, and led his division in Sherman's March to the Sea, and the 1865 Carolina's campaign. He was brevetted major general on Sept. 1, 1864, and promoted to full major general of volunteers the following year.

Partially stamped in black on the reverse, Webster & Brother, [Louisville], Jun. 1865, with 2 cents blue revenue tax stamp that is hand cancelled in ink, and period ink ID, Col. Giles A. Smith. Card is trimmed. Light age toning and wear.
