((1824-82) Born at Utica, N.Y. He enlisted on May 18, 1861, at New York City, as colonel, and was commissioned into the 17th New York Infantry. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general, March 13, 1865.

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Standing view in uniform with rank of colonel with a medal pinned to his coat. Brady, Washington imprint on the front mount. Signed in ink on the front, H.S. Lansing, Colonel, 17 N.Y. Light age toning and wear. Edges of the mount are very slightly trimmed. Scarce.

The 17th New York Infantry, known as the "Westchester Chasseurs," were present at 1st Bull Run, participated in the siege of Yorktown, made a gallant assault at 2nd Bull Run where they suffered 183 casualties, and took part in the battle of Fredericksburg and Burnside's ill fated "mud march."
