War Between the States

(1837-66) Born at Dunkirk, N.Y., he graduated from the College of the City of New York, and was a lawyer by profession. He enlisted at New York City as a 2nd lieutenant, on October 12, 1861, and was commissioned into the 53rd New York Infantry. He served as a Signal Officer on the staff of General John G. Foster. Promoted to major, on March 7, 1862, and commissioned into the U.S. Volunteers Aide-de-Camp, he served as A.D.C. on the staff's of General Ambrose E. Burnside, and General John G. Parke. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general, on April 2, 1865, for gallantry in the battles at Forts Stedman & Sedgwick, Va.
